Saturday October 15 saw the inauguration of the new drinking water plant in Coulommiers (Seine-et-Marne), designed and built by Stereau with the Gagneraud group and HB Architecte, under the supervision of Artelia.
In Coulommiers, drinking water had been banned for under-12s since 2016 due to excessive levels of fluoride and strontium, chemical elements naturally present in groundwater. While some local authorities have been able to solve the problem by mixing with a new resource, the town of Coulommiers was looking for a more sustainable solution that was easier to operate. Restrictions on use have now been lifted following commissioning of the new drinking water plant designed and built by Stereau. To reduce the fluoride and strontium content of water and distribute water that complies with current quality requirements, Saur’s Engineering subsidiary has implemented a water treatment process that is unique in France at the new Coulommiers drinking water production plant. Water from boreholes is decarbonated with lime to reduce hardness and remove fluorides and metals, including strontium.
